Clinical Instructor
Advanced Heart and Lung Transplantation Training Program
Division of Cardiac Surgery & Lung Transplantation
University of California, San Francisco
AY 2027-2028
The Division of Cardiac Surgery & Lung Transplantation at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking applications from board-eligible or board-certified thoracic surgeons, or foreign equivalents, interested in advanced training in cardiac and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Clinical Instructors train in a high-volume, multidisciplinary environment integrating cardiothoracic surgery, transplant medicine, advanced heart failure, pulmonology, critical care, and allied transplant disciplines.
The program offers two advanced clinical training opportunities:
Heart Transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support Clinical Instructor
The Heart Transplantation & MCS pathway provides advanced training in the multidisciplinary management of patients with heart and lung transplants. Clinical experience includes surgical management of transplant candidates and recipients; heart and lung transplantation; donor evaluation and selection for donation after brain death (DBD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD); organ procurement and recovery; mechanical circulatory support; and the indications, deployment, and management of ECMO.
Clinical Instructors also gain exposure to advanced organ preservation and perfusion techniques, including machine perfusion, Trans Medics and ex-vivo technologies, and normothermic regional perfusion. Participation in clinical outcomes research is highly encouraged.
Lung Transplantation & ECMO Clinical Instructor
The Lung Transplantation & ECMO pathway provides focused advanced training in lung transplantation and the evaluation and treatment of advanced cardiopulmonary failure. Clinical Instructors participate in donor heart and lung recovery, transplantation, perioperative patient management, and ECMO care.
The pathway also provides additional experience in non-transplant thoracic and cardiac surgery, with an emphasis on cardiopulmonary bypass. Participation in clinical and research conferences is an expected component of the training experience.
Clinical and Academic Experience
In both positions, Clinical Instructors participate in the multidisciplinary care of patients with advanced heart and lung failure across the continuum of transplant, MCS, and ECMO care. Clinical experiences may include donor evaluation and selection, organ procurement and recovery, transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, ECMO cannulation and management, cardiopulmonary bypass, preoperative evaluation, postoperative management, and multidisciplinary transplant selection activities. Training may be tailored to the applicant's interests, including combined heart-and-lung, lung-focused, or cardiac-focused training.
Clinical Instructors also contribute to the Division's academic mission through clinical teaching of residents, fellows, students, and other learners. Participation in longitudinal scholarly activity – including clinical research, quality improvement, presentations, and other academic activities – is encouraged.
All clinical activities are performed under appropriate faculty supervision and are subject to applicable credentialing and privileging requirements.
Appointment
Selected candidates will receive a one-year (12-month) Health Sciences Clinical Instructor appointment with a competitive salary. The appointment may be renewed for one additional 12-month term, subject to program needs, satisfactory performance, and applicable appointment requirements.
