The Department of Surgery at The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is seeking an outstanding academic leader to serve as Vice Chair for Research. The primary goal of this position is to expand and strengthen the Department’s research portfolio. Appointment rank may be at the Associate Professor or Professor level, on either the tenure or research track, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The Vice Chair for Research will:
- Lead efforts to recruit tenure-track and research-track faculty with strong research potential and alignment with departmental priorities.
- Mentor junior faculty in developing and advancing their research programs, fostering a culture of inquiry and collaboration.
- Maintain a well-established, extramurally funded research program of their own, serving as a model of research excellence within the department.
Departmental Affiliation: The successful candidate will hold membership in the clinical division within the Department of Surgery that best aligns with their clinical expertise and research interests.

Education Requirements
- Candidates must have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent).
Certifications
- For appropriately board-certified M.D. or Ph.D. candidates, any area of clinical expertise in Surgery will be considered.

Required Qualifications
- Funded research program in either the field of cancer, immunology, gut microbiome or combination is required.
- Appointment to the tenure track requires research experience at a level which enables procurement of outside funding.
- Candidates must have federal or foundation funding as principal investigator, a strong publication record and excellent communication skills.
- Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so.
- The successful candidate should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, be committed to ongoing performance improvement, and to providing care as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
Desired Qualifications
- Candidates with R01 level funding (or equivalent) are preferred.
