






















Description
The general surgeon is a faculty member who is accountable for carrying out clinical and administrative duties, as applicable, in a manner to promote high-quality clinical services and excellence in education and training programs at Beaumont, while establishing and expanding resources and participating in quality and process improvement activities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide patient evaluation and management in the Department of Surgery at Beaumont Health System including duties both at the clinic, hospital, and Beaumont Outpatient Campus in Lenox, to complete the full range of general surgery, including office procedures, endoscopy/colonoscopy, and use of the DaVinci robot, while providing coverage to the inpatient and SICU hospital wards.
- Fulfill 6, 24-hour call responsibilities monthly for trauma at our Level III Trauma Center. There is an opportunity for additional shifts for additional compensation.
- Fulfill 100, 24-hour call and coverage responsibilities annually for the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). There is an opportunity for additional shifts for additional compensation. Note that this baseline coverage requirement is subject to change based on the total number of employed general surgeons. Any adjustments to this baseline expectation must be approved by the Chief Medical Officer.
- Assist with teaching residents, mid-level providers, and students with the highest professionalism as related to the practice of medicine. As requested, provide formative evaluation of residents’ knowledge, skills, and overall performance including professional attitudes.
- Participate in general surgery quality initiatives and attend any required collaborative statewide meetings and other general surgery conferences. Actively participate in the meetings and provide feedback to the collaborative regarding quality initiatives and pertinent data collection requirements and definitions (Lodging and travel commitments are included in expectations of attendance).
- Bring back to respective facilities and committees information shared at any meetings, quality initiatives that are being worked on, any assistance or help needed by the facility to support the BCBSM Collaborative and active engagement with the Quality team and abstractors working on the Collaborative. This can include but not limited to attending local quality workgroup attendance, meeting with data abstractor, and working with peers to disseminate quality initiatives related to the collaborative.
- Support quality, safety, efficiency, and performance initiatives by participating on related hospital and system committees; participating in the development and monitoring of patient safety and quality reports; establishing process improvement initiatives and engaging in service recovery when incidents arise.
- Participate in the development, approval and dissemination of all policies and procedures related to general surgery at Grosse Pointe.
- Identify and assist the Chief of Surgery in developing new programs and in establishing annual goals and objectives.
- Complete all clinical documentation in a timely manner consistent with health system, payor, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure proper billing for all patient encounters and procedures, respond to coding queries and coding feedback in a timely fashion.
- Complete Beaumont clinical and safety mandatories and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine ("OUWB School of Medicine") mandatories, as applicable, on a timely basis to ensure corporate compliance.
- Fulfill meaningful participation criteria within the OUWB School of Medicine by delivering lecture, committee service, or other participation.
- Participate in activities related to improving operational and financial performance, quality and patient satisfaction as requested.
- Be logged in and available on Mobile Heartbeat during the workday and when on call.
- Assure that all activities are performed in compliance with standard of care, existing guidelines, policies, procedures, rules. Medical Staff Bylaws, accreditation requirements and appropriate use criteria.
- Must satisfy continuing medical education (CME) requirements, have and maintain a DEA number and be fully eligible for enrollment with insurance companies including Medicare.
Performance Review:
The Physician will undergo an annual performance review by the Chief of Surgery or Chief Medical Officer based on annually established goals and objectives including, but not limited to, the number of patient encounters, procedures performed, assistance in program development, and quality measures.
EDUCATION. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- D. or D.O. with Board certification or eligibility with completion of an ACGME approved residency in General Surgery.
- Must be board certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery within three years of eligibility.
- Must obtain and maintain ACLS and ATLS certification.
- Must be licensed and maintain all requirements to be licensed in the state of Michigan
- Must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills, a persuasive communicator who is empathetic, and a respectful listener who can create an atmosphere that allows individuals to flourish within the context of the department.
