Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center moved to 1000 Rush Drive in Salida, Colorado, on April 1, 2008. The facility's design enables us to provide state-of-the-art care using advanced medical technology and practices.

The hospital is the healthcare center for the entire region, serving nearly 20,000 people throughout the Salida Hospital District (Chaffee County and parts of Fremont and Saguache Counties).

Site Design
The hospital's design has key features such as a healing garden, patient waiting areas with lots of windows, original artwork throughout the facility, private rooms for all patients, a walking path and Wi-Fi areas.

Staff circulation is separate from public circulation, minimizing confusion for visitors and allowing staff and materials to move efficiently throughout the hospital.

The hospital is designed to be a healing environment for visitors, patients and staff. The building has been oriented so that the unique views from the site can be enjoyed by patients and staff from inside the building.

Inpatient rooms are all on the second floor, many with mountain views. All inpatient rooms are single rooms with private bathroom/shower.

The mission of the hospital, its image, its functional planning, its efficiency, provisions for patient comfort and safety, and an attractive, healthy work environment for staff were the principle criteria in the planning of the hospital.

Company History

Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center is a Critical Access Hospital located in Salida, Colorado. The hospital serves visitors to and the residents of the Upper Arkansas Valley, which includes Salida, Buena Vista, Villa Grove, Saguache, Granite, Howard and surrounding communities.

HRRMC was established in 1885 as the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Hospital for railroad employees. In 1962, the railroad sold the hospital to a group of local community leaders. The hospital ran as a private corporation until 1976, when the Salida Hospital District was formed, and the community members who had provided money in 1962 were reimbursed. In 1989, the hospital's name changed to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, to better reflect the services and area served.

Hospital Changes
The old hospital underwent many renovations, including two additions. After a fire in 1899, the hospital was rebuilt. During 1924-25, a large, two-story patient wing was added. Another addition and further renovations were made in the early 1980s and again in 1994.

On April 1, 2008, the hospital moved into a new state-of-the-art facility on Hwy. 291, one mile west of the old facility. This 98,688-square-foot hospital will serve the medical needs of the Upper Arkansas Valley for decades to come.
