Company History

Methodist Hospital History

In 1892, Asbury Hospital opened in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It had 32 beds for patients. In 1916, the hospital grew to 180 beds. From 1921 to 1928, the U.S. government used it as a veterans hospital.

In 1935, Asbury joined other area hospitals in an alliance. It became the Minnesota Hospital Service Association. It offered health insurance to local companies. It eventually became Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. And it served as a model for other Blue Cross and Blue Shield organizations nationally.

In 1959, the leaders of Asbury built Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. It had six floors and 276 patient beds. Ten years later, a 24-hour emergency department was added. And in 1970, a cardiac intensive care unit opened.

During the next 20 years, Methodist expanded the care offered to patients. In 1974, the Methodist Cancer Center and One Day Surgery Center opened. In 1977, it became one of only five Parkinson’s Disease Information centers in the country. And in 1986, the hospital started its Eating Disorders Institute. They also opened the Methodist Foundation in 1972 to support the community.
